What is a smart key?

Many smart keys contain an emergency mechanical blade, usually hidden inside the fob. This is there for situations such as a flat fob battery or a vehicle battery problem. It may open the driver’s door, but it is not necessarily intended to start the engine in the normal way.
Starting a car with a flat smart-key battery

A transponder key is often less expensive to replace, particularly when it has no remote buttons. It still needs accurate key cutting and electronic programming, but the physical unit is normally simpler. Smart keys are generally more costly because they combine proximity electronics, remote functions and an emergency key blade, while programming can involve more involved security procedures.
Neither type is automatically better for every driver. If you have a trades van or an older family car with a traditional ignition, a transponder key is reliable and familiar. When all keys are lost, replacement is not just a cutting job.
